Zakopane is the largest urban center in the immediate vicinity of the Tatra Mountains, a large winter sports center, and has long been informally called the winter capital of Poland. Within the city's administrative boundaries there is also a significant part of the Tatra National Park (from the Suchej Woda Valley to the Mała Łąka Valley). The number of tourists visiting the entire Tatra Mountains is estimated at about 2-3 million annually.
The city is located at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, in the Podtatra Trench (Zakopiańska Valley), on several streams, the waters of which ultimately flow into the Zakopianka River (a tributary of the Biały Dunajec River). It is the highest situated city in Poland. Within the administrative boundaries of the city there is part of the Tatra Mountains (with the highest point being the peak of Świnica - 2301 m above sea level). Apart from the TPN area, the city is located at an altitude of 750-1126 m above sea level. The central point of Zakopane? intersection of ul. Krupówki and Kościuszki is located at an altitude of 838 m above sea level. In the north there is the Gubałówka range, and in the south Giewont dominates the city.
