Zakopane - is the largest urban center in the immediate vicinity of the Tatra Mountains, a large winter sports center, for a long time informally called the winter capital of Poland. Within the administrative boundaries of the city there is also a significant part of the Tatra National Park (from the Sucha Woda Valley to the Mała Łąka Valley). The number of tourists visiting the entire Tatra Mountains is estimated at about 2-3 million per year.
The city is located at the foot of the Tatra Mountains, in the Podtatrzański Trench (Zakopane Basin), on several streams, the waters of which ultimately flow into the Zakopianka River (a tributary of the Biały Dunajec). It is the highest located city in Poland. Within the city's administrative boundaries, there is part of the Tatra Mountains (with the highest point being the summit of Świnica - 2301 m above sea level). Apart from the TPN areas, the city lies at an altitude of 750-1126 m above sea level. The central point of Zakopane - the intersection of Krupówki and Kościuszki streets is at an altitude of 838 m above sea level. To the north stretches the Gubałówka range, and to the south Giewont towers over the city.
