Ruciane-Nida is a town in the Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, in Pisz County, on Lake Nidzkie and Lake Guzianka Wielka, and the seat of the Ruciane-Nida urban-rural commune. From 1975 to 1998, the town was administratively part of the Suwałki Voivodeship. Nearly 15,000 inhabitants The Ruciane-Nida commune, with an area of 1,000 hectares, is part of the Masurian Landscape Park, and the Nidka River flows through the town itself. It obtained city rights on January 1, 1966. Ruciane-Nida was formed by merging the towns of Ruciane, Nida, Wola Ratajowa, and Guzianka. The founder of Wola Ratajowa in 1502 was Jakub Rataj from Kujawy. Ruciane was called Rudczanny/Rudschanny, and in the Third Reich – Niedersee. Nida was called Nieden. The town is a well-known tourist center in the Masurian Lake District. The D29-219 railway line – Olsztyn – Szczytno – Świętajno – Pisz – Ełk – runs through the town. Until 1945, another railway line also existed, connecting Ruciane-Nida with Mrągowo. The southernmost marina of the Masurian Shipping Company operates in Ruciane during the summer. In December 1956, a fiberboard and chipboard plant was opened south of the Nida estate and on the western shore of Lake Nidzkie. It was one of the most modern facilities of its kind in Poland, and indeed Europe, employing approximately 1,500 residents of Ruciane-Nida and the surrounding area. In 1995, the plant declared bankruptcy.
