After the conquest of the Lubusz people by the Polans, this area was incorporated into Greater Poland. Then, in 1252, this land was incorporated into the Margraviate of Brandenburg, forming the nucleus of the Neumark. Until 1945, the city was associated with the German province of Brandenburg, and after World War II, it became part of Poland.
