Poznań - one of the oldest and largest Polish cities, located on the Warta and Cybina rivers, in the Wielkopolska Lakeland; the historical capital of Wielkopolska, the capital of the Wielkopolska Voivodeship. Within the city there is a large road and railway junction and the Ławica international airport. The fifth largest city in Poland in terms of population and seventh in terms of area.
Poznań was one of the capital and religious centers of the Piast state in the 10th and 11th centuries, in the past it served as the capital of the state and the seat of the rulers. In 2008, Poznań - the historic complex of the city was recognized as a historical monument. The first rulers of Poland are buried in the Poznań Cathedral located on Ostrów Tumski Island: Mieszko I and Bolesław the Brave.Currently, Poznań is a large economic, academic, scientific and cultural centre. A large centre of industry and services, the site of the oldest and largest annual Poznań International Fair in Poland. According to external assessments conducted by the Moody's Investors Service rating agency, in terms of credibility for investors it is slightly inferior to the much larger Warsaw. The seat of the curia of the Poznań Archdiocese.
Poznań is the 4th academic centre in Poland.
The city is sometimes called the "musical capital of Poland" in tourist guides due to the boys' and men's choirs operating here, the Henryk Wieniawski violin and luthier competitions organised every 5 years, as well as thanks to the activities of the Polish Radio Chamber Orchestra "Amadeus" conducted by Agnieszka Duczmal, the opera and the Polish Dance Theatre.
The city is strongly connected in terms of transport and economy with the surrounding communes of the Poznań district, which form the Poznań agglomeration (with shared infrastructure, e.g. waterworks).
Poznań, according to the ranking prepared in June 2009 by the editors of the weekly Przekrój, is the best city to live in Poland.
