Zakopane - a city and commune in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship, the seat of the Tatra County. In the years 1977-1994, the town was the seat of the Tatra Commune. In the years 1975-1998, the city administratively belonged to the Nowy Sącz Voivodeship. Zakopane is the largest urban center in the immediate vicinity of the Tatra Mountains, a large center of winter sports, and has long been informally called the winter capital of Poland. A significant part of the Tatra National Park (from the Sucha Woda Valley to the Mała Łąka Valley) is also located within the city's administrative boundaries.
